July 28 Praises Systems and Network Administrators

These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find a company or organization that doesn’t count on a network of computers to accomplish even the most basic of tasks. And with that, it’s crucial to have skilled systems and network administrators to keep things in shape or iron out the kinks when things go awry.

This week, in recognition of Systems Administrator Appreciation Day on July 28, we caught up with one of our own network maestros, John C.

How long have you been at Infinite Energy, and what brought you here?

I just hit five years this month. I saw the posting for the administrator position in Atlanta years ago. Infinite was the preferred natural gas company for my apartment complex. At the time, I didn’t know much about the company beyond that.

Tell me about what you do? What’s a typical day like?

If it has electricity and a network port, we’re usually involved. Anything that our service desk can’t sort, we assist with. That ranges from our network, back-end storage, email and any servers or services that need addressing.  And we work closely with the technology and development team to bring in-house solutions in and maintain them. I’m the one who created our imaging and application deployment system from the ground up. I’m the primary contact for anything with that. Right now, our big priority is trying to get Windows 10 ready for everyone.

And what makes you feel good about your job?

Designing good solutions for the business. I don’t like things breaking or not working. And if I can get it done right the first time, it makes all our lives that much easier and more pleasant. The environment here is more fluid than at other places. And that can be challenging. It can be like playing whack-a-mole with all the things that pop up. But down the line, when I get feedback on how much better something works, it’s well worth it.

What do you like to do in your off time, when you’re not network administrating?

I guess I’m a walking stereotype of the IT nerd. I play lots of video games on my personal computer I built, currently dumping hours into Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy XIV and Overwatch. I recently got a PS4 as well. When I get tired of being a hermit, I sometimes go out to one of the nature parks around here and hike. I have an adopted dog and cat both getting into their elder years.
