Houseplants Help Save Energy and Improve Health

Many of you already know that trees, shrubs and vines planted around the home can save energy. In the right places, plants can block cold winter winds or provide shade from the scorching summer sun. But did you know houseplants can help, too?

The energy-saving effects from houseplants are less dramatic, of course. But every little bit helps.

Houseplants mostly save energy through humidity. As water evaporates from the leaves, it can make a home feel warmer when it’s cool. And it can make a home feel cooler when it’s warm, as strange as that seems. The humidity doesn’t actually change the temperature. But it does change most people’s perception of it. And that can save you money on your heating and cooling bills, as you adjust your thermostat accordingly.

And there are other advantages, too. Plants improve air quality, which can keep you healthier and save money on doctor’s visits. Varieties such as aloe vera, peace lily and spider plant remove airborne pollutants like mold spores, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Experts suggest between one and three plants per 100 square feet of living space.

There’s even some evidence to suggest houseplants reduce stress and improve concentration. One study showed that interaction with houseplants lowered blood pressure and made people feel more relaxed. If you work in an office, some say taking a few houseplants there can increase productivity and one’s sense of job satisfaction.

Many species are easy to care for, requiring little maintenance in exchange for all the great benefits offered. There are houseplants suited for all kinds of indoor conditions, and they’re a great way to spruce up the décor of almost any room.

If you’re looking for another way to save energy, freshen up your living space and add a little beauty at the same time, consider houseplants. They’re just one more example of Mother Nature helping us with our modern-day problems.
