Embrace Your Geekness With Smart Home Savings

July 13 is Embrace Your Geekness Day. And we want to encourage you to embrace that inner geek with some smart ideas that will help save energy at home. Try these on for size:

Smart bulbs. One of the best ways to save energy is by cutting your lighting costs through the use of energy-saving bulbs. And LEDs are, perhaps, the best way to make that happen. Smart LEDs go several steps further. They’re WiFi enabled, for one, which means you can control them from anywhere with a smartphone or laptop. They can be programmed to switch on or off at certain times, or you can do it yourself with the touch of a button. And many come with dimming and color change features that make it easy to create a particular mood. And some even play music, which is a great way to embrace your geekness.

Smart windows. Another great way to save energy is by controlling the amount of light the sun is able to beam through your windows. But you won’t need blinds or curtains if you’ve got smart windows. There are several products on the market that fall into the smart window category. But smart tint, which gets applied to existing window glass, is one of the more affordable options. Chemicals in the tint react to electricity, making the window clear, tinted or completely opaque. And the smart function allows you to adjust the tint from anywhere with a smartphone or laptop.

Smart washers and dryers. We’ve come a long way since the days when we beat our laundry on rocks at the local stream. Today’s washers and dryers make mole hills of the mountainous chore laundry once was. Smart washers and dryers, especially, are designed to use the least amount of energy (and resources) possible, which saves you money. And they’re super convenient, which saves you time. Wash and dry cycles can be monitored and controlled from a smartphone or tablet no matter where you are. Some models tell you how you’ve used your appliance over a given period of time or remind you to buy laundry detergent.

Many smart home products are compatible with Nest, too, which is great news if you’ve already got something like the Nest Learning Thermostat™. These products interact and function as an integrated system to help you save even more.
