Infinite Energy School Grant Winner Builds Robotics Lab

Infinite Energy recently gave more than $47,000 in grants to eight Georgia schools to help fund education projects. And some of those projects are already underway, including at Norton Elementary School.

In Gwinnett County, we caught up with Ryan Moore. He’s the technology coordinator at Norton Elementary, and he gave us the lowdown on what the school has planned.

“We are extremely excited about winning this grant!” Moore said. “This will allow Norton Elementary to give our students hands-on learning experiences that are very relevant to today’s digital world.”

The folks at Norton plan on using the grant—about $9,000—to create a STEAM/robotics lab for students. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

“STEAM education is critical to getting our students ready to be the next generation of the American workforce,” Moore said. “STEAM related jobs are projected to grow by 14 percent from 2010 to 2020. By educating our students in this content, we can better prepare them for their futures.”

Moore said robotics is a great way to introduce kids to the world of computer science and engineering. And many of the robotics kits needed have already arrived. The lab, when complete, will be able to accommodate 30 students at a time. Moore said the project should be ready by the middle of April.

Students in kindergarten through second grade will use entry-level robots called Bee Bots. These strengthen problem solving and introduce kids to sequencing and basic coding, Moore said.

Lego WeDo kits will also be used and appeal to a wider range—first through fourth grades. The Lego kits come with more than 40 hours of science lessons.

Two other robotics kits target third through fifth-graders with more intense problem solving and coding lessons. And a fifth variety, too, helps fourth and fifth graders continue to build upon these skills. The school has also received shipments of Chromebook laptops and Kindle Fire tablets to help students with their projects.

Infinite Energy is proud to have a hand in this school’s innovative approach to preparing young minds for the future. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight the projects these grant winners have come up with.
