Central Gwinnett Working to Mix Academies

Central Gwinnett High School was just one of eight Georgia schools this year to receive Infinite Energy grants. In total, we gave more than $47,000 to these schools. The money went toward projects they wanted to do in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM).

Central Gwinnett got $7,500 to pilot a learning project called Staging STEM. It aims to mix science, art and theater. We caught up with Central Gwinnett language arts teacher Michele P. to find out more about the project.

“So far, the Staging STEM project is going well,” Michele said. “We are still in the planning and development phase of the project and will kick off in the fall.”

When that happens, students from the high school’s STEM and Fine Art and Communications academies will come together to create educational theater workshops, she said. These workshops will travel to different schools in the region, teaching various scientific concepts to younger children.

“It’s important for students to see the connections between two seemingly opposite subjects,” Michele said. “It helps students see the relevancy in them. Students will often disengage if they aren’t interested in the class or subject. If we can get students to see the connection between something they love and something they originally were shut down to, the possibilities are endless.”

Although it’s still in early stages, Michele said she hopes to see similar projects at other schools in the area one day. She’s excited for what it means for the high school students who take part. And she’s excited for younger students who’ll get to experience the fruits of Central Gwinnett’s labor.

“Our favorite part of the project is getting students engaged in STEAM at a young age. By the time they come to us at a high school level, they’ll have a better understanding of our academies and what they may be interested in pursuing.”

Infinite Energy is proud to support education in the communities we serve. Stay tuned in the coming months for more news on the Staging Stem project.
